N.C.’s Explosive Hispanic Growth

The U.S. Census Bureau today released 2010 population data for North Carolina showing the state’s Hispanic population more than doubled over the last decade.  The 2010 Census reports the Tar Heel State’s Hispanic population increased an explosive 111%.  Of the 24 states with released 2010 Census data so far, only Alabama (144.8%) has experienced a larger percentage growth of Hispanics.

“The census data confirms what so many of us in the Hispanic community have known for a long time,” said Leonor Clavijo, Executive Director for the North Carolina Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  “Hispanics are moving to places where there are good opportunities to work, live, raise families, and educate their children.  The data is a testament to North Carolina’s quality of life and the smart decisions leaders of the Tar Heel State have made to build thriving communities.  Hispanics are here in North Carolina to help build this state.”

The NC Hispanic Chamber suspects North Carolina’s Hispanic population boom is even higher, as many immigrants have shied away from participating in the U.S. Census count.  “Even with our best efforts to educate the immigrant community, we know there is an historic Hispanic under-count because of a fear factor of government,” said Irene Gonzales, the Community Affairs Director at Univision 40 Television in Raleigh and an NCHCC Board Member.

The NC Hispanic Chamber believes this Hispanic population boom will present some challenges, but more opportunities for a growing state.  The NCHCC will dive deeper into this census data at a March 15th breakfast in partnership with the North Carolina Regional Black Chamber of Commerce.  A U.S. Census Bureau official will present more detailed demographic data on North Carolina’s growth and population trends.  The breakfast will take place from 8:30am to 10am at the NC Hispanic Chamber headquarters at 5800 Faringdon Place, Raleigh, NC.  All are welcome to attend.
